Background of the Study

Poverty has long been recognized as a significant barrier to political participation, particularly in rural communities. In Makurdi LGA, Benue State, poverty levels are high, and many citizens face challenges in accessing education, healthcare, and economic opportunities (Ibrahim & Adamu, 2023). This study investigates how poverty in rural communities influences political participation, focusing on voter turnout, civic engagement, and the perception of government policies in Makurdi LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While poverty undoubtedly affects the economic well-being of rural communities, its effects on political participation and engagement have not been comprehensively studied in Makurdi LGA. 2. The barriers created by poverty in rural areas limit civic engagement and political mobilization.

  3. Citizens living in poverty are less likely to engage with political parties or participate in elections in Makurdi LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
